Notepad Replacement Question

Post by DisabledTrucker » Sat Jan 14, 2006 3:07 pm

I'm looking for a replacement to Notepad that allows for me to search by line number, is there such a beast? If so, which one? There are so many replacements out, I'm not sure which one is actually best and can also search by line number as well.

I think I may have found an answer to my own question, EditPad Lite seems to do what I need for it too and then some...

Has there not been an addon made of EditPad Lite yet?

Command line printing

If you ever want the ability to right click a text file...you may want to keep notepad

I don't want to replace it completely I just had a need for something else that required more than notepad was capable of... but thanks anyways...

Hi trucker, I replace windows notepad with notepad2, but for the bigger jobs I have been using PS Pad for ages now and it has the best range of features by far. The author is a really cool guy and constantly working on the program adding new features and bugfixes every few weeks.

Some peeps won't like that it takes up larger disk space, but I can live with that for all the extra plugins I can add to it and the endless ways I can customise it to suit my own personal workflow. It's so feature rich that I am still discovering more and more nifty things it can do even after all this time LOL.

As an added bonus, it is fully portable too so I carry it with me on my USB stick.

I encourage you to check it out ;)

I'll definately take a close look at it, I'm really liking editpad right now though, although I'm not crazy about the fact I have to pay extra to be able to do side-by-side comparisions, then again I can always use beyond compare 2 to do them.

At the time I posted this I was just mainly looking for something that allowed me to search by line number which is what I mostly needed that notepad doesn't do, but I like all the extras that editpad offers for the lite version except that to gain the functionality of the comparisons I have to pay for the pro version. I'll see what the PS Pad offers differently. Thanks for thought though. I've used notepad 2 previously and I didn't care much for it either and if memory serves they still don't have line numbering available in that one either.

PS Pad does all the things you seek for free. EditPad Pro was the editor I used for 3yrs prior to PS Pad and when I compared features there was only one thing EPP could do better than PSP - PSP can only lay out block formatting in justified text whereas EPP offer Right or Left aligned.

It's a small sacrifice for all I gain - and for free.

PSPad has a most excellent comparision feature under Tools/Text Differences. I use it constantly when hacking my php websites and I couldn't live without it.

:)
