Virtual machines?

Post by XIII » Fri Sep 05, 2008 3:30 am

What kind of virtual machines do you use to test your install discs?

I'd prefer one which reflects my real machine reasonably well, if possible good enough to even activate (my HP royalty OEM) Windows (XP).

These are my experiences:
  • VMWare Player/Workstation (evaluation) with SMBIOS.reflectHost = TRUE: workable, but no activation
  • VirtualBox with DMI strings set via VBoxManage setextradata command: workable, but no activation
  • VirtualPC 2007 SP1: workable, but no activation (unless its BIOS is hacked, but that's not legal)
I have not tried QEMU or Bochs yet.

I'm interested in this thread for a slightly different reason but I do not wish to hijack it... I use VirtualPC but it is sooo damn slow during my installs that I can't seem to make much progress.

I am wondering what the users find to be faster for installs?

To give an update myself: I discovered that I can extract and modify the BIOS from both VirtualPC 2007 SP1 and VMWare Workstation 2.0.5 to get them to activate XP, but that does not seem very legal to me...

I'm rather disappointed that I'm unable to modify the open source VirtualBox where it would be legal.

That way I can keep the virtual machine longer than 30 days if I need to?

(not for testing installing XP, but for testing installing applications on that install)

Not sure whether I will actually do this. Curiosity was a factor as well I guess... :lol:

There is a simple string you place in a vmware file and it automatically makes the virtual vmware computer activate using the same oem info from the computer you are using.

So if you have an HP computer it will preactivate on your vmware just like the HP you are using. ;)

just add this string to the bottum of your .vmx config file for the virtual machine:

SMBIOS.reflectHost = TRUE
