[Addon] Internet Explorer 8 for 32-bit XP 1.5.39

Post by 5eraph » Fri Sep 12, 2014 11:32 pm

Internet Explorer 8
Originally by YumeYao.
For Windows XP, Last Updated 2018/06/13 by 5eraph.

Description:
  • This addon will replace Internet Explorer 6 on your Windows XP installation CD with Internet Explorer 8 along with its latest updates.
Features:
  1. Intended for Windows XP 32-bit only. Windows 2003 support has been dropped since version 1.4.12.
  2. A syssetup.dll-patch-free method to avoid errors in setuperr.log that does not increase your install CD size. (NoSetupErr style only)
    This method is even better compared to MrNxDmX(NR)'s:
    • File replacements are finished at T-13 (NR's are not until OOBE), so any svcpack.inf execution that relies on IE (for example: WPI) works.
    • Doesn't use the unique registry for delayed boot-stage file replacing so the key can be used by other addons/nLite.
    • Doesn't require extra disk space.
  3. Fixed some errors created by Microsoft (wbem path and some reg entries). Cleared some garbage left by Microsoft (infobar sounds).
  4. Extremely easy for translators to build localized versions. The guide is here.
  5. Addon structure: File copy and registry handling are system-like.
Contents: Credits:
  • YumeYao, for originally releasing this addon and writing this post which 5eraph blatantly copypasta'd. :)
  • MrNxDmX, for his thought of making the addon free from setuperr.log complaining.
  • nonno fabio and OnePiece Alb, again, for their invention to copy files like system components act.
  • ricktendo64, Outbreaker and adric; for maintaining this addon long after it was first abandoned.
Notes:
  • On XP with SP2 or an earlier service pack level, proper update(s) that update browseui.dll, shdocvw.dll, shlwapi.dll and sqmapi.dll are required.

    2 Versions are released. They can be integrated upon each other seamlessly. One is the "Clean" style with almost no differences compared to OnePiece's. The other is the "NoSetupErr" style, i.e. no setuperr.log entries. It uses 3-pass file copying so it may be a little slower than the "Clean" style. (In fact the first pass is unnecessary, but it's difficult to realize it with just an entries*.ini file.)

Sorry, I don't have it. Nor do I have an updated link to it. :(

I'm also missing the Clean "fix addon". I'm willing to host them it if somebody sends them it to me.

I can't get Microsoft Update (with IE8) to scan for updates. I briefly get the msg checking if your computer has the latest version .... and then I get:

[Error number: 0x80248015] The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are trying to view.

The strange thing is that wuauclt /detectnow works without error. Only the website is showing the error. Anyone else see this?

I'm also getting the Error number: 0x80248015, as of tonight. Last time I used MU previously was on the 15th, and it just worked, as always. I think maybe the MU/WU site is overwhelmed by the flurry of anxious users trying to get the out-of-band update MS14-068. Maybe tomorrow it'll be back working as usual.
BTW, the MS Update Catalog is on-line and working, and KB3011780 can be installed directly from the command-line, because its .inf has no IsWinEmbedded condition inside. :)

Later addition:
Thanks to adric, we can pinpoint when WU stopped responding tonight to between 09:03 and 09:25 PM GMT precisely. The relevant posts are quoted below:
adric wrote: (2014-11-19 09:03 PM GMT): FYI, I'm getting a POSReady update kb3011780 being offered by WU which looks like something out-of-band.

You're using the addons in the wrong order, adric. The POSReady addon will overwrite the IE8 addon, causing those updates to be offered. ;)

The basic addon order was given before, though perhaps not explicitly:
  1. Update pack (has IE6 files)
  2. POSReady addon (has IE6 files)
  3. IE8 addon (has IE8 files)
5eraph wrote:So, if you want to use the POSReady addon on a 32-bit Windows XP Home or Pro source then you need at least these two files:
  • XPSP3_QFE_UpdatePack_20140909.7z
    XPSP3_QFE_POSReady_Addon_20140909_5er.7z
If you want the hack then you can use the "Enable" addon linked above. If you want IE8 then you can use YumeYao's IE8 addon, or use OnePiece's Addon creator to make your own IE8 addon.

Hmmm, I used RVMi and the last addon in the list was IE. According to the log, the addons got extracted as they appeared in the list, but processing was in a totally different order. So I guess I'll have to add an additional pass for IE. Does RVMi allow you to specify the order how addons are processed?

Order of extraction is all that matters in this case. When selecting addons manually in RVMi, the order sometimes gets switched around; and the last selection becomes the first in the list. To prevent this from happening I load a precompiled integrator.ini file that lists the addons in the proper order under [AddonPacks] when testing.

Code: Select all

[AddonPacks]
XPSP3_QFE_EnablePOSReadyMU_Addon.7z=D:\Sources\_Addons\x86
XPSP3_QFE_POSReady_Addon_20141119_5er.7z=D:\Sources\_Addons\x86
YumeYao_IE8_Addon_Nosetuperr_ENU_1.5.2.7z=D:\Sources\_Addons\x86
It's also useful for testing addons that are in different folders:

Code: Select all

[AddonPacks]
5er_Win2003_Addon_2014-11_2_x64.7z=D:\Sources\_UpdatePacks
5er_IE8_Addon_2014-11_1_x64.7z=D:\Sources\_Addons\x64

I looked at the ini from the last rvmi run and saw the entries below. According to what you said, that integration should have worked. Can you tell me what IE6 files you used so I can check the RVMi target or XP system to see if the IE8 files were overwritten?

Code: Select all

YumeYao_IE8_Addon_Nosetuperr_ENU_1.5.2.7z=Z:\$XPi\@Addons
Edit: I spot-checked mhtml.dll, urlmon.dll and wininet.dll and they are all IE8. I also see reg entries for IE8 and the normal IE6 which I dont't recall seeing previously. Shouldn't it be IE8 reg entries only? QFECheck:

Code: Select all

From all the comments I have seen on all the various forums, it does seem to be a website issue. It wouldn't be the first time it has taken MS a while to straighten out such a problem.

Registry entries for the IE6 version of KB3003057 are from the POSReady addon. The IE8 addon does not remove them.

I'm retesting now...

Tested (RVMi) Nosetuperr 1.5.2 with POSReady addon 20141119 in XP Pro, without POSReady hack. SetupErr.log is empty. QFECheck reports no errors. Still receiving error 0x80248015 from the Microsoft Update website. But this is currently a widespread problem on their end, not ours.

Adding the POSReady hack post-setup shows no change from the Microsoft Update website.

Same results testing (RVMi) Clean 1.5.2 with POSReady addon 20141119 in XP Pro, without POSReady hack; SetupErr.log notwithstanding.

Reverting MUWeb.dll to r256 works. MicrosoftUpdateCatalogWebControl.dll does not need r248 to work--r249 still works for me.

I manually ran kb3003057 and both of the KBs I mentioned disappeared. I don't know why WU thought they needed to be installed. I never understood how WU detection works. Also wondering why you're not seeing this. BTW, MU website is now working with the downgraded muweb.dll. When you scan from there, are you also seeing zero updates?

I ran another round of tests yet I can't seem to reproduce your issue, adric. Zero high priority updates from the Microsoft Update website, and eight optional updates. The downgraded muweb.dll is now part of the POSReady addon (v20141121).

I'll need more information to help solve your problem. A copy of the Integrator.ini file and other relevant source building information would be most appreciated.

Thanks for the offer 5erapf. I did some more tests with the image of my November XP build. When I applied the supposedly missing update (KB3003057), I did an install snaphot before and after the install and not much was changed so I took the original image and applied the changes below a piece at a time. I was able to get the MU website to show 0 high priority updates after only applying the three Internet Explorer\ActiveX Compatibility flags from 0x00000400 to 0x04000400 listed in the snapshot changes. No idea why this satisfied WU not to offer anything and if this has to do with the Addons I integrated. Does anyone know?

Those lines exist in both addons in file IE.inf as shown below. All I can think is that you're replacing the file from the addon with one that may contain your own personalized tweaks. If this is the case, please try adding those tweaks to the existing IE.inf instead of replacing the whole file from here on. Registry entries are changed and added from each successive IE cumulative update--not just registry entries for included files.

IE.inf v1.5.2, lines:
1174, Clean;
1210, NoSetupErr.
HKLM,"Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\ActiveX Compatibility\{183C259A-0480-11D1-87EA-00C04FC29D46}","Compatibility Flags",0x10001,00,04,00,04
IE.inf v1.5.2, lines:
1403, Clean;
1439, NoSetupErr.
HKLM,"Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\ActiveX Compatibility\{B1549E58-3894-11D2-BB7F-00A0C999C4C1}","Compatibility Flags",0x10001,00,04,00,04
IE.inf v1.5.2, lines:
1416, Clean;
1452, NoSetupErr.
HKLM,"Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\ActiveX Compatibility\{BB339A46-7C49-11D2-9BF3-00C04FA34789}","Compatibility Flags",0x10001,00,04,00,04
I've personally added the following line to v1.5.0 from the KB2977629 cumulative update:

IE.inf v1.5.0, lines:
6202, Clean;
6238, NoSetupErr.
HKLM,"Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\AdvancedOptions\BROWSE\ACTIVITIES","OSVersion",,"4.5.0.0.0"

I use the addons as is. I'm not aware of any IE tweaks that I have which change these flags. Is there something I can check in the installation target dir after integration to see if those flags are correct. If they are, then something is happening during or after installation is completed.

I'd need to know the addons you're using to give you that information, adric. The POSReady addon includes the same lines from the IE8 addon:

5erPOSUp.inf v20141121, line 504:
HKLM,"SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\ActiveX Compatibility\{183C259A-0480-11D1-87EA-00C04FC29D46}","Compatibility Flags",0x00010001,0x04000400

Check the INFs in all of your addons for those flags. Check your tweaks for those flags. Check those flags in the registry after each installer you run from SvcPack, RunOnceEx, GUIRunOnce or cmdlines.txt. Beyond that, I'm at a loss without more information from you.

Okay, it is not an integration problem caused by any of the addons. After I install a new build, I always run a check from the MU website to make sure everything is up-to-date. It just dawned on me that when I had problems with MU, I tried different things to get the MU website to work. At the time I was unaware of the muweb.dll downgrade trick. Anyway, one of the suggestions was to reset IE. Internet options -> Advanced Tab -> Reset button. If you do this on your system and then Run MU, you will get the 2 high priority fixes offered.

Good find. I get the same result when resetting IE.

Tried finding instances of those entries on the system drive after installation without luck. I'm wondering why IE changes them when reset.

I haven't encountered either error, vmanda, and I just checked again to be certain.

Yes, Botus, it is possible. I have created a patched update.exe file to accomplish this. Directions for use are included.

It should be mentioned that, due to the method used in the patch, the KB3008923 package will no longer check the IE version before installing. Make certain you have obtained the correct version of the the update package before installing. Otherwise, you may unintentionally install IE6 files on a system with IE8 installed.

You don't. It's not listed there.

Go to the Microsoft Update Catalog using Internet Explorer and search for KB3008923. Click the Products column twice to change the sort order and select the IE8 update for "Windows XP Embedded". Click "view basket", then download.

YumeYao's WMP10 and WMP11 addons need updating as well. Have the registry entries. Need sleep.

with this new update, my IE no longer shows the "new topic" or the "update post" buttons on this forum (among MANY other types of similar no-show images on pretty much ALL web sites)

web sites also no longer "flow into place"
meaning what used to by 1/2" high on the screen is now 1.25" high instead
and what used to be 2" left to right is now filled with empty space and taking up 4"

anyone else noticing odd behavior like this?

I'm not seeing it in XP x86 or x64. Posting this from an XP x86 test install with the latest IE8 addon in VM.

Are you talking about KB3058515, or addon v1.5.8?

I'll need more details to reproduce the problem, long-lurker. Upload your "Last Session.ini" or integrator.ini if you can. Or PM me to send to my email.
