[Release] Disable Windows Pic & Fax Viewer v1.3-070825

Post by Mrs Peel » Mon Jan 30, 2006 5:36 am

A must have addon pack for all you peeps out there that despise the default Windows Picture & Fax Viewer as much as I do!

Disable Windows Picture & Fax Viewer
LINK: MrsP_Disable_WinPicFax_Addon_v1.3-070825
MD5: 53EF4E535BEB62643D32CC994CFEDD64
SIZE: 1.5 KB
Description: Disable the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer
Op System: Windows XP & 2003 (x86 only)
Builddate: 2007/08/05
Language: English
Title: Disable PicFax
Version: 1.3
Uninstaller: Restores the image viewer registry setting back to windows default
How It Works:
* Deletes the context menu handler for the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer so your image files will no longer open with this hideous application.
* Deregisters the shimgvw.dll file so that "open with Windows Picture and Fax Viewer" is completely gone from Folder Options file types menus.
* Prevents the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer from hijacking your image file association and icons when you install your preferred alternative Image Viewers like XnView and IrfanView.
Big thanks to 5eraph and Kel who helped me with ideas and code and field testing.

:D

PS: Please note this addon may be obsolete now if you are using nLite to make your ISO builds, as Nuhi has since added some options to nuke this pest in his recent nLite releases.

[Edit 2006/03/09] Recoded ALL Mrs Peel Addon Packs for platform and licencing compliance.
[Edit 2007/07/06] Rebuilt to include an uninstaller which reverts your registry back to the default windoze viewer
[Edit 2007/08/05] Updated uninstaller
[Edit 2007/08/25] Tweaked uninstall reg entries to force a proper icon to display in Add/Remove programs

Thanks for the Addon and the honorable mention. Great job! :)

One slight change to the key to reenable the Viewer, but I'm not sure it even matters:

Code: Select all

[Viewer.Reg]
HKCR,"SystemFileAssociations\image\ShellEx\ContextMenuHandlers\ShellImagePreview",,"{e84fda7c-1d6a-45f6-b725-cb260c236066}"

No you don't need that {e84fda7c-1d6a-45f6-b725-cb260c236066} bit in the code. I tested the install and reinstall locally here on my Win2k3 and it worked just fine without it. I think leaving it out will save conflicts with different OS's, but thanks for the suggestion anyway and your generous help :)

Sorry peeps, I only just discovered that I munted the entries file for this.

It's all fixed now and MD5 sums updated. Please grab this updated version 1.1 and humble apologies to those who have already slipstreamed this into an ISO build and had it fail to install :(

I don't remember seeing an option in nLite recently to nuke the default viewer? I'm using 1.0 RC8 as well.

Rebuilt to include an uninstaller.

I owe 5eraph a HUGE apology now, cos as I was rebuilding this I discovered that you actually DO need the CLSID {e84fda7c-1d6a-45f6-b725-cb260c236066} to restore the original settings properly OOOOOPS

Thanks, will use before loading Xnview in Nlite. Couldn't find an option in Nlite to get rid of the default.

I am fairly certain the latest nLite beta build has an option to disable this viewer (check in their reg tweaks section). And there is always the option to remove the dll too (not sure if that is safe to do tho). I'll ask a friend of mine who is an nLite beta tester where to find it and get back to you about that.

On the other hand, this addon of mine does one have an advantage over the nLite method - which is that my uninstaller for this will restore the settings back to windoze default. Less advanced users would not have the skill to reverse that for themselves by using regedit.

Cheers ;)

Hmmm ... I looked at Nlite again, but didn't see anything. Then again, it's 4:30 am here ...

Also, concerning the addon, the "preview" is still present on the context menu when I right click on a graphics file (BMP in the samples) and ... it kicks off the original viewer (shimgvw.dll is present in Windows/system32). However, the uninstaller does show up in remove programs, and the viewer is not in the start menu list, nor does it show in the file type choices, so at least part of the addon worked.

Not really a problem for me, because the XnView preview is in the context menu (sweet, by the way).

I'm using XP SP2 with updates from Ryan's packs.

Well it IS a problem for me if it is doing that.

I don't see a "Preview" in my own shell menu here. Maybe I deleted it at some stage, or maybe it is a feature of your XP and not my Win2k3.

Can you please take me a screencap of this and also export the reg entries where the "Preview" entry is so I can take a look and disable that with this addon too.

Also, are you quite sure you have not installed something at some time that might have added this "Preview" entry?

Cheers for the feedback.

As you requested, I have created a screenshot and a few registry entry files, but I'm not sure how to get them to you.

As far as whether I inadvertently added "preview" back in, that could be. I'm testing wiith Virtual PC, as you will see in the screenshot, with many of the addons provided here. I will create a barebones version (just windows XP SP2) with only this addon and let you know the results.

Results of a barebones XP SP2 install with only this addon (nLite "Hotfix, addons ..." section) ... no luck. Picture and fax viewer still very present in context menu and still runs when you click "preview."

I can send you a screenshot if that would be helpful. I can also pull registry entries, but you might want to point me in the direction of specific keys in which you are interested.

Thanks.

Update ... I took the cab file and expanded it on my working test XP system and did a manual right-click install of the .inf file. Lo and behold, it worked as advertised.

In the non-working instance I reported above, I used Nlite to build the ISO and included this addon near the end of the svcpack list. Perhaps something is goofy in the XP install process or my setup that prohibits it from working.

Just curious - is this addon also supposed to remove or disable the "filmstrip view" to which browsing "my pictures" defaults? It's not an annoyance, just wondered if filmstrip view is a function of the picture viewer.

First thing: Many thanks for your Addons, MrsPeel, using quite a bunch of them. :)

Um, just wondering, does Win2k have this Pic & Fax Viewer? If it does, i'd like to remove that in W2K too.

Yikes, you have been busy. Wanna apply for the job of my beta-tester? :P

Thanks for this feedback, cos I had a report from another member that it was not working correctly and had spent quite a lot of time troubleshooting his problem and was unable to replicate it.

Do you mind just checking for me (I am assuming you are an XP user, yes?) if when you right click on images do you see a "Preview" option in the shell menu? And if so, does clicking it direct you to the old native windoze pic/fax viewer? To a "print preview"? Or to open in XnView (which I see you are also using)?

Cheers!

I Use Windows XP SP2 English.

When I right click on images there's a "Preview" in the shell menu .

When I Click on the preview it open the picture in XnView.

So for me those two addons works as it should...

I'll investigate further just in case...
