About the default user account...

1) During Windows setup, the active account is the default user account, so anything written to HKCU will be written to the default user account (also be careful about running any apps that might leave "litter" behind, as that will then show up in newly created user accounts; this is why I'm wary about running apps during setup). So if you want to make any changes to the default user, the best time to do it is during setup, before the OOBE bootup.

2) If you want anything written to the default user account after setup, you'll need to do the following:

Code: Select all

REG LOAD HKU\DEFAULT_USER "%AllUsersProfile%/../Default User/NTUSER.DAT"
(...make changes to HKU\DEFAULT_USER here...)
REG UNLOAD HKU\DEFAULT_USER
(Alternatively, you could also just dump the current HKCU to default user, but I think it's best to be surgical and add only the registry entries you intend; replacing the entire default hive with the current hive may be heavy-handed and might have unforseen side effects.)

3) .DEFAULT is not the default user account; after setup has been completed, the default user account is accessible only if you load the hive manually (either through REG LOAD as shown above or through regedit). Stuff in .DEFAULT controls stuff like login screen settings.

Indeed it can. I actually have a list of registry entries that I delete prior to dumping HKCU in order to avoid these problems. Likewise, in a domain environment I import a good deal of settings with scripts. It's taken me a good number of years to get all of this working exactly as I want to between reg settings, .ini files, .xml files, etc. You'd think with the super computer capabilities we have these days that there would be something more cohesive in place.

I use IEACCESS=OFF in the [Components] section of WINNT.SIF to prevent all the shortcuts.

Unfortunately that comes with a slight complication. It makes IEXPLORE.EXE a supperhidden file (that inevitably changes back to supperhidden even after you change the attributes). This is the same situation when you use the WMPOCM=OFF for WMP11. The thing is that I don't want to outright blast away these features making it difficult at best (for admins) and impossible at worst (for users) to execute these programs.

There must be some kind of middle ground where I don't have shortcuts populating every single crevice of the operating system when a new user account is created.

I've personally had mixed experience with this. I use your "RougeSpear's Standard Addon" and don't have any issues with IEACCESS=OFF (meaning I just use your shortcuts from the "Internet" folder). But I couldn't use WMPOCM=OFF because that seemed to prevent your WMP11 shortcut from getting created (and I couldn't figure out any want to create a WMP11 shortcut during runonceex). Maybe I have something else goofy going on?

Ok,
But still the question remains.
How do we get het registry values of this addon in the registry for all users
even newly created ones?

I've tried this in the cmdlines.txt hoping that it will populate the default user account

Code: Select all

"rundll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSectionEx %SYSTEMROOT%\inf\NR_IE7en.inf,UserTweaks.AddReg,,4,N"

"rundll32 setupapi.dll,InstallHinfSection UserTweaks.AddReg 128 "%SYSTEMROOT%\inf\NR_IE7en.inf""
but the second line gives a error. :(
The first one executes but does nothing.

I'm open 4 any suggestions. :)

That's because you can't invoke AddReg sections directly. You can only call an install section, and then have that install section call AddReg.

Did you see this post, which was linked to by the first post of this thread?

I tried that one, but that isn't working because
Posted earlier by me wrote: The 'Tweaks' in this addon are in the HKEY_USERS\.Default registry in the runonce section.
This will never be executed. Even so when I insert the tweaks @ T-13 (svcpack section) the tweaks are shown in the HKEY_USERS\.Default
internet explorer section. but new users never get these settings.
So I need a way to insert the tweaks for all users.
Or I'm doing something wrong and this post is working.

If so then I hope someone can give me the working NR_IE7en.inf and xIE7en.inf file.

I have a solution. Maybe not a nice one but it works. :)

I've created a inf file with only the tweaks.
Then in entries_NR_IE7en.ini added this:

Code: Select all

[sysoc]
NR_IE7enUpdate=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,UserTweaks.inf,HIDE,7

[dosnet_files]
d1,UserTweaks.inf

[txtsetup_files]
UserTweaks.inf = 1,,,,,,,20,0,0
Recompiled the addon and voila I got my tweaks for the current and all new users.

Tweaks.inf

Code: Select all

Glimmerman, you should replace the following line in entries_NR_IE7en.ini:

Code: Select all

[sysoc]
[color=yellow]NR_IE7enUpdate[/color]=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,UserTweaks.inf,HIDE,7
with this:

Code: Select all

[sysoc]
[color=white]NR_IE7enUserTweaks[/color]=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,UserTweaks.inf,HIDE,7
to match with this in UserTweaks.inf:

Code: Select all

[Optional Components]
[color=white]NR_IE7enUserTweaks[/color]
You could also avoid modifying MrNxDmX's addon by creating your own addon for your tweaks. Just add [general] and [i386_compress] sections to what you already have for ENTRIES*.INI.

Couldnt read all posts above but as far as i can see, there is sth with tweaks.
In short, tweaks section in NR_IE7en.inf file works for first created account which is an administrator account. But if you want tweaks to get applied for later created users (2nd, 3rd or then) you need to add tweaks in xIE7en.inf file too. HKU.delreg section is needed but its somewhat useless cos those settings are stored in default users dat file, and i cant delete it. The simple way i found was to use a second inf file which already exists in addons.

Can somebody please test these:

Edit:
##Links removed. Please check first post.

I dont have time to make a test now. I've updated my turkish addon pack, and it works perfect. These 2 should work ok too.
This month there's no new updates for ie7.

My addons dont take much attention anymore imo. I will only use hosting services which has a counter for now. If these are not used anymore, i wont update them. Sorry.

Cheers

FWIW Mrnxdmx, I for one appreciate your effort in making and maintaining this addon. I use it and no offense to Onepiece, I prefer it to his addon.

I seriously could not live without this addon. And just to let you know, your subdomain regularly generates as much traffic as mine and I host a lot more different titles than you do. So that means this addon is probably way more popular than all of my stuff combined.

I've tested v2.0.3 alt on a few live machines, both disc and RIS installs. I don't use IE normally, but I've tested it out about as best as I can think - Windows Update site, sites with heavy Flash and AJAX. All seems to be working well.

And the various parts of the OS that use IE to render seem to be working for me as well, but I can't remember if there was some sort of problem with the previous version. Something about missing icons or pictures in the sidebar or something.

Same goes for me too...since I don't use IE on regular bases.
Works fine if you ask me... :)

First post is updated with new links. As no one reported issues its safe to post the addon, lol :)

Thank you all for your replies. What you ALL said makes me feel better here. I stopped feeling like i'm alone here. Me sometimes need some posts to get motivated :)

When new offficial fixes are out, i'll try to update both addons asap. Also will look in unofficial hotfixes, maybe some of them attracts me.
Cheers to all :)

Hello folks,

I had the following error messages in the setuperr.log in a recent install, which seems to be IE related.
I used the v2.02, integration with nLite and added the latest Cummulative Update for IE (October) to the integration (as it was not in v2.02) (and Ryan update pack sept09 release):

Setup could not register the OLE Control C:\WINDOWS\system32\mshtml.dll because of the following error:
GetProcAddress returned error 127 (the specified procedure could not be found).

Exact same error mesages for:

msrating.dll
webcheck.dll
pngfilt.dll

Does anybody know where this comes from and what to do about them?

Thanks:

SymSpaceT, i guess you've used Alternative addon. It generates error messages like that. All is posted on first post. If you dont want to see those messages, you can try normal addon ;)

Yes, I have read the first post. However, the post does not specify what kind of error messages those are. (it might be useful to specify). The post also says "we are working on it" and feedback etc . welcome. These are the reasons I posted.

So.. is there any useful info on this problem?

It was something like setup cannot find required module, or setup cannot register files. Dont remember now, but same errors occurs in onepiece's ie7 addon too.

That code is now in this style:
[FirstUserStart]
AddReg=IE7-Core.AddReg,IE_DesktopIconTweak.AddReg,Tweaks.AddReg
I've modified it after the IE Desktop Icon Reg Tweak.

And for removing ie icon you need to modify all these values:
HKCU,"SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\HideDesktopIcons\ClassicStartMenu","{871C5380-42A0-1069-A2EA-08002B30309D}",0x10001,0
HKCU,"Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\HideDesktopIcons\NewStartPanel","{871C5380-42A0-1069-A2EA-08002B30309D}",0x10001,0
HKLM,"SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\HideDesktopIcons\ClassicStartMenu","{871C5380-42A0-1069-A2EA-08002B30309D}",0x10001,0
HKLM,"SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\HideDesktopIcons\NewStartPanel","{871C5380-42A0-1069-A2EA-08002B30309D}",0x10001,0
to:
HKCU,"SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\HideDesktopIcons\ClassicStartMenu","{871C5380-42A0-1069-A2EA-08002B30309D}",0x10001,1
HKCU,"Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\HideDesktopIcons\NewStartPanel","{871C5380-42A0-1069-A2EA-08002B30309D}",0x10001,1
HKLM,"SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\HideDesktopIcons\ClassicStartMenu","{871C5380-42A0-1069-A2EA-08002B30309D}",0x10001,1

I'll add this explanation to first post later.

As far I can see, none of those files is related to the IE7 addon, so the cause of the errors should be finded elsewhere.

By the way, MrXNxDmX, can I have the permission to create an Italian version of your addon, of course recognizing all the required credits? Thanks.

Welcome boshkash. Can you please a new integration, with antivirus disabled in your machine. And please try not using any other programs while integration. I think your source is broken. The installation cannot be complete with those file copy errors.
