[RELEASE] dgelwins most stupid addon

Post by dgelwin » Wed Nov 16, 2005 12:38 am

--UPDATE, Cleaned up the code a bit.

--UPDATE the original addon only adds ctype for the first user created, so i created a new one that adds type for all user ever created in systems life :D

this is an addon that activates the clear type font smoothing by default from the very first logon, i know this is a dumb addon and im probably the only one that will end up using it, but hell cleartype just looks so damn sexy in graystyle themes and light colored desktop wallpapers :D.

here is another link (New for all users :D, updated 16 nov 2005, 8:37 am gmt -6)

@kel
yup,

why do you think i created it, but in order for it to work with your cleartype cpl you have to use the 1.1 because it registers for all users, and.... it registers after your pack and after windows has set up the registry so it guarantees that it doesnt get overwritten :D

@kel
for any future addons and any current ones for that matter, if u ever want to include them to any of your packs go right ahead, i use your uber pak so it helps me out a lot (one less addon to download seperately and integrate jijiji)

ps, i will pm you what you may consider to be an interesting addon. hahaha

thats why i said its a stupid addon. most people dont know what cleartype even is, and you dont really notice a great difference unless you have an lcd monitor, but notice the shadows, when switching between cleartype fontsmoothing and standard.

I've noticed the difference it makes on CRT's, but it was mainly designed for LCD monitors, so that may be why you can't tell any difference with it and without it on an old CRT...

LOL!

This is a good concept for an addon, to be sure. But I prefer to add this registry tweak with others I have (CMD here, UNhide underlined letters for keyboard navigation, etc). I want to thank you for pointing me in the right direction for finding those tweaks. I wouldn't have easily found them otherwise. :)

/me hides the remote...

[OffTopic]
Does anyone happen to know the regkey to show extensions for known filetypes? This is a default feature that I find stupid and dangerous, especially for newbies.

Here are the ones I'm using now:

Code: Select all

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell\cmd]
@="Open Command Window Here"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell\cmd\command]
@="cmd.exe /k \"cd %L\""

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive\shell\cmd]
@="Open Command Window Here"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive\shell\cmd\command]
@="cmd.exe /k \"cd %L\""

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop]
"FontSmoothingType"=dword:00000002
"MenuShowDelay"="250"
"UserPreferencesMask"=hex:be,3e,07,80
The one you want is UserPreferencesMask. I don't know how to translate it into INF form, but it does work when added from a REG file.

The only problem I'm having is that I have to reboot or log off once for all the settings in HKCU...Desktop to take effect. If I had them all in INF form I think I could slip them in elsewhere to have them apply sooner. Where can I find a guide to translate REG to INF entries?

Still looking for "Show extensions..." I'd be interested in seeing the tweaks you're using as well, I'm still in the process of finding useful ones.

HKCU,"Control Panel\Desktop","FontSmoothingType",0x00010001,02,00,00,00
HKCU,"Control Panel\Desktop","MenuShowDelay",,"250"
HKCU,"Control Panel\Desktop","UserPreferencesMask",1,be,3e,07,80

Not quite dgelwin,

Code: Select all

HKCR,"Directory\shell\cmd",,,"Open Command Window Here"
HKCR,"Directory\shell\cmd\command",,,"cmd.exe /k ""cd %L"""
HKCR,"Drive\shell\cmd",,,"Open Command Window Here"
HKCR,"Drive\shell\cmd\command",,,"cmd.exe /k ""cd %L"""
HKCU,"Control Panel\Desktop","FontSmoothingType",0x10001,2
HKCU,"Control Panel\Desktop","MenuShowDelay",,"250"
HKCU,"Control Panel\Desktop","UserPreferencesMask",1,be,3e,07,80
5eraph, here`s the Hide/Show file extensions tweak in reg and inf. ;)

Code: Select all

; -----
; ----- Hide File Extensions Reg
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced]
"HideFileExt"=dword:00000001
; -----
; ----- Show File Extensions Reg
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced]
"HideFileExt"=dword:00000000
; -----
; ----- Hide File Extensions Inf
HKCU,"Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced","HideFileExt",0x10001,1
; -----
; ----- Show File Extensions Inf
HKCU,"Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced","HideFileExt",0x10001,0

@xable,
this

Code: Select all

HKCR,"Directory\shell\cmd",,,"Open Command Window Here"
HKCR,"Directory\shell\cmd\command",,,"cmd.exe /k ""cd %L"""
HKCR,"Drive\shell\cmd",,,"Open Command Window Here"
HKCR,"Drive\shell\cmd\command",,,"cmd.exe /k ""cd %L"""
HKCU,"Control Panel\Desktop","FontSmoothingType",0x00010001,02,00,00,00
HKCU,"Control Panel\Desktop","MenuShowDelay",,"250"
HKCU,"Control Panel\Desktop","UserPreferencesMask",1,be,3e,07,80
is exactly the same as what you post which is this

Code: Select all

HKCR,"Directory\shell\cmd",,,"Open Command Window Here"
HKCR,"Directory\shell\cmd\command",,,"cmd.exe /k ""cd %L"""
HKCR,"Drive\shell\cmd",,,"Open Command Window Here"
HKCR,"Drive\shell\cmd\command",,,"cmd.exe /k ""cd %L"""
HKCU,"Control Panel\Desktop","FontSmoothingType",0x10001,2
HKCU,"Control Panel\Desktop","MenuShowDelay",,"250"
HKCU,"Control Panel\Desktop","UserPreferencesMask",1,be,3e,07,80
this

Code: Select all

HKCU,"Control Panel\Desktop","FontSmoothingType",0x00010001,02,00,00,00
is actually the correct syntax for what you put which is this

Code: Select all

HKCU,"Control Panel\Desktop","FontSmoothingType",0x10001,2
either can be used ;)

if you dont believe me test my code or better yet, check msdn Link

Ryan tought me you have to convert those hex values to decimal.

I practice what he teaches.

EDIT,
I still think your wrong.

it is a good practice, especially for simplifying your code so people can understand it better, but just wanted you to know, its not the only way, and its a matter of preferrence. :D i suck with conversions thats why i dont do them, if i was good with them i would not have faild math a lot as a kid :lol:

dgelwin, in the very MSDN link you posted, they show an example where "0x00010001,7" is used. As for the other part, there's no functional difference between 0x10001 and 0x00010001.

Any INF from MS has it done the way I did it. The only time I've seen it done the other way is when some text editor converted .reg files to INF format (poorly IMO).

i do it this way like 0x00010000 instead of 0x10001 because im learning and in the link to the addreg directive i saw that the flag was 0x00010000, i had no idea that you could use this 0x10001 until i saw it in kels uber pack inf. but i had already learnt it one way and it doesnt cause any problems doing it like that so i stuck to it. :D

--edit and as for hex(2): values i find it easier to just convert them to string and add them as 0x00020000 (FLG_ADDREG_TYPE_EXPAND_SZ) values

Ok dgelwin, it appears that i am partly in the wrong but you misunderstand me a little so i`ll break it down just to be clear.

Have a look at this;
HKCU,"Software\WinRAR\FileList\ArcColumnWidths","name",0x00010001,64,01,00,00
In red can be safely removed to save space and has no effect functionality.
HKCU,"Software\WinRAR\FileList\ArcColumnWidths","name",0x00010001,64,01,00,00
In red is a Hexadecimal value
HKCU,"Software\WinRAR\FileList\ArcColumnWidths","name",0x10001,356
In red is a Decimal value

I was under the impression you had to convert the Hexadecimal value to a Decimal value otherwise it would not import properly.

After some tests it seems that either value format is ok but personaly i will continue to convert to decimal for easyer reading.

@xable very gratefull, and i have to ask a silly question but how can i convert hexadecimal values to decimal? the reason i use hex values are because i dont know how, if i knew how i would gladly use decimals, can you plz tell me how you do this conversion?

I'm curious as well, because by my calculation dec:291=hex:123. How do they split the pairs?

291/(16^2) =1r35
35/(16^1) =2r3
3/(16^0) =3

Windows Calculator can do it, you know

EDIT: OK, not quite as much as needed here. The easiest way to find out is to just look at the value in the registry. It shows you both the hex and decimal value.

I want to thank you all for the valuable information. Believe it or not, you've cleared up a great deal of confusion regarding INF entries for me. The above examples show almost all data types that can be found in the registry (as far as I know), and will help me greatly in creating my own.

@Xable:
Thank you for the Hide/Show file extensions tweak.

I don't have the original addon, but I do still have the addon he helped me build. I've been adding to it ever since. It's hard to believe it was so long ago. :)

I'd be happy to repost an addon that only enables ClearType by default if no one objects.

You're welcome, kronik.

No problem, DisabledTrucker, but if I release any more registry tweak addons then I should probably just create my own thread. ;)

If you're wanting my cumulative tweaks addon then please let me know. For that I will create a new thread.

Description:
  • This addon shows keyboard shortcuts in menus without having to press Alt first.

Actually, 5eraph, I was asking dgelwin to release his, but doesn't matter who does it I guess. I was mostly looking for the CMD Here that includes the hard drives as well as the other ones he mentioned in that statement. I personally use most of those myself but do them in a different way, it would be nice to have them all in a single add-on to simplify my time, I probably could do it myself for that matter, as I have the information to do it, but I'd rather have a tried and true version that someone else has done, this way I don't have to hear any more people telling me mine don't work for them and having them disappear from the threads.
