downgrade wmp10 to 9 in x64?

Post by prawny12009 » Tue Sep 09, 2014 4:29 pm

I have installed the xp plus super pack on my xp x64 pc but many features rely on windows media player 9 to run.

All the non wmp based features work flawlessly themes, games, screensavers, digital media editors etc) and the activation wizard accepts my cd key and validates fine.

I have tried the wmp9 installer from the cd but it just prompts me that the version of windows is newer and contains a later wmp version so cannot install.

I downgraded 11 back to 10 and have tried uninstalling wmp from add remove windows features to no avail.

Is there any way i can force wmp 9 to install over wmp 10 or stop wmp 10 from being installed during initial installation?

I have tried disableing windows file protection and deleting all the media player folders from programs x86 and deleting the wmp files from the windows/inf folder but i still get the message "the version of windows on this computer already contains a more recent version of windows media player, windows media player 9 setup will now exit".

Anyone know where windows stores the info on which version is installed? so that i can maybe edit it to read a lower value like 8.000.000 or something.

I don't know if it's possible, prawny12009. Even XPx64SP1 includes WMP10.

from what i have gleened from the web the pre release build 1218 has wmp 9 but i can't for the life of me find it to downloa online or find anyone with an old cd of it.

I did clean some more registry entries out for wmp and now i get a different error message about "this version of windows media techologies is not compatible with this hardware platform"

I have checked the exe for similar strings/ dialog but don't see the message that gets displayed, i am thinking it is an os side block rather than an installer block.

if anyone is inerested a lot of the funpacks and powertoys work on x64 too, the tweakui powertoy doesn't but you can get a version from neosmart that has been adapted to function on x64.

I don't know if this is o.k. to say on here concidering xp is now very much eol but you do need to remove the launch conditions from the .msi with orca on most of them just like you do with the microsoft zune themes etc but after that they work fine.

I have installed a load of screensavers from win 98+ me too i have the flying windows logo one (like starfield but with old win logo) you just add them to the syswow64 folder and select them like any other screensaver, their is a good one called windows that drops your desktop down in random cascading blocks.

I am going to boot up my win 7 drive and see if i can copy the .scr files from that too.
