So is there still no means of 'stripping' down Windows 7?

nuhi's disappeared, so no 7Lite by the looks of things. LitePC appear to have gone quiet for years on end and haven't even done anything for Vista, come to think of it.

Mind you, I'm not sure how difficult it usually is to edit a massive wim file. However it's done, I just don't wish to sacrifice 10Gb or whatever to the OS alone should I do move on to 7. There has to be *some* useless components I can happily live without. My XP directory is still under 2Gb and I'll be happy if it's somehow possible to get 7 under, oooh, let's say 5Gb?

It's called windows starter edition.

How much hand-wringing are you going to do to 'save' 5 GB when 500 Gb drives cost U$50-?

In some cases, old attitudes as well as old equipment needs to be thrown out.

The best you are probably going to get for updating and removing stuff is the Windows 7 Toolkit.

According to that site that will also only run under 7 (and possibly Vista).

So I take it there's no real way of slimming down a 7 image from an XP host?

Install vmware\install Windows 7 on it.

THEN make your image...

The reasons for this is that XP does *not* have native support for WIM images. I think Vista does, so anything Vista and above should natively be able to run those programs that require WIM support.

As previously mentioned, you can install DISM and imagex support on XP, however I do not know how well the WIM support is on XP.

Heh, pretty ironic that - seeing as 7-Zip can seemingly read and create WIM images just dandy under XP. But I guess that doesn't really "count".
