If i only use this registry entry then the Windows XP Update Center is checking for updates for hours, and it never stops.

Install Gh0sts' manual update pack. Scanning should work properly after that. Also make sure you have the Microsoft Update plugin installed in IE, and update with Microsoft Update not Windows Update.

Can you point me to this Gh0sts' manual update pack?
I never had problems with the updates in 2008 until 2015 but for some reasons it has stopped working now between 2016 and 2018.

I run into the same problem with the SP4 from Gh0sts. I even used the original untouched Windows XP SP3 and after the installation i installed the SP4 from Gh0sts and after a restart i run the Microsoft Update and it's still checking for updates for hours, and it never stops.

I don't think it's because i'm using VirtualBox or?

I had this problem in Virtualbox...
I let it run for a few days and it showed up... If you have to shut your computer down, put the VM to sleep, and when you wale it back up it will keep looking for updates.

@Mike86 and @mockingbird, EACH MONTH, first MANUALLY download and apply the latest IE cumulative update and the latest updates that apply to any version of Office that you have installed. After that and a reboot, when you next check MU/WU it should act correctly in a more timely manner. At least that is what I have read.
Cheers and Regards

@bphlpt
Thank you, this has fixed the problem.

Do we now really have to manually download the IE cumulative update each month to get the other updates.

AFAIK, yes. From what I understand, the problem lies at MS in the MU/WU system for XP, dealing with superseded updates. This problem now has existed for many months, going on a year or more, and there is no indication that Ms has any desire to fix the situation, though they have been told about it often. I'm glad it works for you now.
Cheers and Regards
