depends on what you want to do, just trimming avi's i use different utilities that are fast and designed for that. if i'm re encoding then its a whole nother process.

more details please on what you intend to do to your videos :)

*for direct dvd to avi ripping, i like handbrake (its easier than autogk)

*for general dvd ripping, dvd shrink, dvd decrypter, and ripit4me are what i use.

*if youre looking for a powerful (but expensive) program that does it all, check out adobe premiere.

other than that, i dont really do much with video...i either watch videos as-is, rip shrink and re-encode to avi format, and re-encode the sound to single channel 128kbps mp3...decent quality and saves space

For converting AVIs to DVDs, check out ConvertXtoDVD at http://www.vso-software.fr/. Sure, it's $40 (US), but it's worth the price.....

For DVD editing (like you've converted TV episodes with the commercials in and you want the commercials out), try TMPENG DVD Author. Don't know the web site, but the version I have is bare-bones editing software, but so fast at cutting video segments out.

Hope it helps!
