It's not MCE without .NET at all, it's MCE without .NET 1.0. In other words, going straight to 1.1.Siginet wrote:That sounds interesting. But I can't find any info in that thread about not needing .net. I have never heard of a way to install it without .net.
I had used his method successfully sometime in the last year before I went to Vista for MCE.
The method (from memory) was basically stripping MCE and .NET 1.0 themselves out with nLite, installing XP off the MCE disc with the MCE serial, installing .NET 1.1 and updates, and then installing just the MCE components and then updates. But there's more detail than that.
I don't have time to look back at the thread right this second, but all the details are in there. I just saw that a couple of you guys are saying that's not the correct thread. I'm in a hurry right now but I'll try to find the correct thread later and post here.
I also noted in that thread that for some reason, the next few times I attempted to do the same procedure, which I had documented 100% the first time I followed his instructions, I got some error, but I'd like to try it again and perhaps see if someone else can reproduce it.
I don't understand the need for .NET, as if you install MCE2005 on a clean HD, and don't update it, then it runs just fine without .NET installed, but as soon as you want to update it with the rollup 2 pack, then the update pack, NOT MCE asks you to install .Net before it will install the rollup pack. There is no way that rollup 2 contains a completely re-written MCE 2005, that has been re-coded in .NET!
I'm sure MCE 2005 does not use .NET "directly", but hey, i could be very wrong, and if i am, i apologise for being an ass

EhExtHost.exe which is in update rollup 2 is reliant on .net 1.1sp1. that is the reason for this.Stimpy wrote:I don't understand the need for .NET, as if you install MCE2005 on a clean HD, and don't update it, then it runs just fine without .NET installed, but as soon as you want to update it with the rollup 2 pack, then the update pack, NOT MCE asks you to install .Net before it will install the rollup pack. If i install this with the original Dutch Components map (from original source cd of NLD installation) then the setup askes if i want to replace dutch files with english files if i push "No" i get an error, and setup stops.
If i push "Yes", i dont know what happends
because i didnt try that yet, but should i take ur components map from rapidshare?
edit:
Made some new unattended with ur cmpnts. Now i will click Yes if de setup askes

NP mate. I already know about it. Maybe after release of sp3, m$ would release a new mce. Who knows. We have to wait sp3 final.electrogen wrote:Sorry i meant The XP MCE SP2 have a look in my mce addon pack it is version 3.0 in there.
@ UtCollector: Yep, modifying NR_IT.exe wil allow you to choose what components to install or not

First let me finish updates for mce, then i'll try that scenarioStimpy wrote:Why do we need this stupid .NET crap, if this guy did it without it? Seriously, MCE does not use the stupid framework, so why are you busting your balls trying to get .NET installed?DigeratiPrime wrote:A long time ago I figured out a way to install MCE on XP Pro without .NET Framework 1.0 and without errors see here:
http://www.msfn.org/board/Windows-XP-20 ... ntry601236
The only thing I got stuck on was "integrating" the Update Rollup 2 package into the MEDIACTR.CAB to save time and space, I stopped pursuing it since the boxes I built for MCE purposes I "upgraded" to Vista with a few dual booting XP.

@ ENU_user: Thanks for links, i'll look into them

@ Stimpy: Also, registering some mce files are based on dotnet files.
@ Raoul90: you can click yes, i'm sure it will finish installation ok. But most words will be in english of course. Try, replacing dll files in the addon. They are from KB900325.

i MrNxDmX ..... u may remember me as Wolfcall from wincert forum ... just wanted to let u know what I've been doing...
sp3-3300 ..... I have messed about a little with v.1 of this addon and this is where I got to.
I have slipstreamed it in vmware with sp3-3300...with media player 11 and netframe 1...2...3...and 3.5 and rollup 2 all before desktop.
Basicallly.....used the addon...as it is..... placing it early in slipstream hotfix list......followed by java6...update 5.....then wmp11......along with my other usual programs and stuff........but absolutely no net 2.....rollup2 will fail if that ahead of it..........rollup2 i put in wpi (installer extracted and folders placed in wpi install folder..rollup 2 will fail if not extracted first) ,,,and didnt allow reboot....followed by all in one netframe i...2....3....3.5.....
Add remove programs show media center 2005 with rollup 2 update.
I tweaked your addon a little to remove startmenu shortcut for mce...as rollup 2 added a duplicate....and while rollup 2 extracted....placed the patched ehres.dll in folder to vista'ize...(the one from the rapidshare link posted on wincert)
working great.....thanx for this brilliant addon.....getting mce to register as value "1" is just pure class ...... thanks again...

@ searchengine: Yep, i remember you. I didnt know that rollup2 would fail if net2 exists.
BTW, its great to know that everything works ok for you
Your desktop seems very cool!!! Especially with sidebar, transparent taskbar and vista'ized MCE
@ Raoul90, you need to change these files from related hotfixes:
encdec.dll --> KB925766
mpg2data.ax --> KB900325
MSVIDCTL.DLL --> KB925766
QUARTZ.DLL --> KB927544
sbe.dll --> KB925766
vbicodec.ax --> KB900325
WSTPAGER.AX --> KB900325
wstrendr.ax --> KB900325
Also these 3 cat files: KB900325.cat, KB925766.cat, KB927544
If it gave registration errors, there should be problems in your mce program. Can you share your medctroc.log file?
KB888795 is ok to show up on MU, but there must be other avaiblable updates too.

@MrNxDmX ... cheers, glad you like my desktop look ... I slipstream Windowblinds to get that transparent look (with a little patch to register)
..... but MCE theme goes in by default .... I just flick to my theme and turn on transparency when I get to desktop.
I think the people who are having difficulty with registration errors.....are all adding net 2 to slipstream hotfix list....ahead of this addon....my first 2 slipstreams I was getting errors too ... until I removed my netframe stuff.....then bingo .... MCE addon has to go in ahead of additional netframe addons ..... and if you want rollup2 to work ....you have to get rollup2 in before net2 ...... addon is excellent...it's the netframe stuff that causing difficulties .....MCE addon first ..... rollup2 second .... net2 last .... thats the way to get all to work....well, thats what working for me anyway.

No other updates tho, i slipstreamed the dutch update pack februar 2008.
And some updates wth nlite:

I forgot too watch into the log
And yes im installing a .net all-in-one
http://www.ryanvm.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5876
I integrate them all except from .Net Framework NLD.
Will make a new install.
edit:
I unpack the package with winrar and replaced files, but where are those files:
Cant find:
mpg2data.ax
wstrendr.ax
KB927544.CAT
I searched my dad's PC (MCE2005) for them but cant find them anywhere. Also not in the update?

downloaded v.2 of the addon ... and tried a little different...
1.used v.2 addon ... but removed startmenu shortcut for mce ... rollup 2 duplicates the entry.
2.downloaded rollup2 from m/soft and extracted it by command prompt and made addon with the various updates in service pack using this order, with these commands:-
WindowsMedia10-KB895572-x86.exe /quiet /norestart
WindowsXP-KB891593-x86.exe /quiet /norestart
WindowsXP-KB895961-x86.exe /quiet /norestart

KB900325.exe /quiet /norestart
wmfdist95.exe /Q:A /R:N /C:"wmsetsdk.exe /WMFDIST /Q /R:N /DisallowSystemRestore"
3.slipstreamed with sp3-3300 and placed your addon first..followed by the rollup2 addon i made .... followed by DotNetFx_All_In_1_Addon_v2 (got that from this site)....followed by wmp11 addon etc....etc.
RESULT - completely silent install, with Rollup2 showing in add/remove as installed....netframes 1..1.1....2....3...3.5 installed......and mce working nice

switches:-
KB900325.exe /quiet /norestart
wmfdist95.exe /Q:A /R:N /C:"wmsetsdk.exe /WMFDIST /Q /R:N /DisallowSystemRestore"
RESULT;- silent install...of all as above....all before desktop ...all in add/remove.....and all fine.

@ MrNxDmX ... I will be glad to test the method you have requested ...I will get back to you asap with my findings.
In the meantime .. this is the website I found the workaround that worked for me ... a lot of information about MCE 2005 and rollup 2 on this site:-
http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/articles/487537.aspx

BTW... 2 of my slipstreaming internet buddies have used the method I told them of and reported success...in fact, they have went from vmware test to install in their pc's....and report real installs excellent.
Will get back to you asap with the way you asked about

Just tried slipstream with wmp11 first....your addon next....rollup2 next....and netframeaio last.
Result.......failure.
registry value changed to "1" and property box shows as MCE ...but ehome folder not even in windows directory....and windows digital accessories not present either...... during install the media center display only showed up for few seconds but showed no error screen ........I am sure the presense of wmp11 first, made addon and rollup 2 just quietly reject.....rollup2 rollsback any install if it detects any problem.
seems it's just got to be addon first.....rollup2 next....and netaio/wmp11 behind addon and rollup2.
I have slipstreamed 3 or 4 times with addon first...rollup2 second....netaio third.... andwmp11 last....and had success every time that way....with all in add remove and no rollbacks. I am sure the above link confirms that wmp11 has to be uninstalled to install rollup2...then re-installed after.
No matter ....more than pleased to test any combination that may or may not help get the smoothest install of MCE in Xp

@Kelsenellenelvian ... Hadn't noticed there was edit button....but thanks for letting me know.....wasn't really wanting to edit anyway ... was adding further comment.
You do know they say that "sarcasm is the lowest form of wit" ...don't you???
At least I wasn't just spamming ...I actually had something to say about MCE addon and its install.
The thing is... I could say nothing because I have my successful install...but preferred to share my findings ...especially when invited to do so by the maker of this addon.

When the files end in "_" that means they are compressed. Open a command prompt in the folder where your "_" files are, and type:Raoul90 wrote:I found them but th ax files are a lote smaller then yours:MrNxDmX wrote: @ Raoul90:

Expand /?
You'll see the syntax of the Expand command. In this case you'll want to type:
Expand wstrendr.ax_ wstrendr.ax
and
Expand mpg2data.ax_ mpg2data.ax
Edit: I like sarcasm!

I know MCE is essentially XP Pro (plus MCE of course) but without the ability to join a Domain, I recall.DJB wrote:Just a quick question, as stupid as it may sound lol.
Apart from being able to integrate MCE into a coroprate XP version (allowing you to use a coroprate key to register), is there any other advantages from using this XP+MCE version that I wouldnt get from a true MCE?
Can anyone tell us if XP Pro of any kind with this MCE addon retains the ability to join a Domain? If so, this would be one advantage.

I was wondering that myself. Haven't had a chance to test it yet. That would be a huge advantage if it is possible.

What would even be nicer is if it was possible to somehow add Windows Server 2003 as well, then you'd have the complete XP.

Fair enough I didnt know, it was just an idea that popped into my head, I didnt realise it wouldn't be compatible.
An update for ppl wondering about if the XP+MCE can join a domain, I think it can.
If you right-click on My Computer, go to Properties, then the Computer Name tab, it has an option to rename the computer or join a domain. If you click the "change" button next to it it will give you an option where you can add a domain name to join.
Unfortunately I dont have a domain set up on my network here, but it looks promising...

DJB: I literally meant the question about whether the MCE addon will work with Win 2003, I don't know if it will or won't. I seem to recall some project (not necessarily here) a couple years ago which might have done that as well.
I don't have a domain set up for my home network either. I'm actually quite ignorant about the advantage of doing so; I should probably learn more about it.

I repacked it with winrar.
Now i want to test it.
But whats the right way too do it?
What i did:
Integrate (in this way):
- Updatepack XP (march 2008, WMP11 + IE7 automic) NLD
- NR_MCE_Installer_Addon_b2
- DirectX (march 2008)
- .Net framework Allin1 NLD
- Java update 5
- Some other not important packs
Is this the right order or ?

looks like wmp11 and .net AIO have to be installed after MCE and the slipstream or t13 install order has to be changed. I'm not sure how to edit that myself yet, so I'm waiting for a link or something.searchengine wrote:Just tried slipstream with wmp11 first....your addon next....rollup2 next....and netframeaio last.

Allright i made a new one.
And i again got the registration thingy, if comes from .net or what? Because then i will delete .net.
This is the way i slipstreamed it:
1. NR mce installer b2
2. .net all-in-one
3. NLD updatepack march 2008 v03.08a (with wmp11, ie7, directx 9.0c)
And after this some other addons
Now i have the log file:

Rollup2
Ok - I am pulling out my hair. Here's what I have done
XP Base - Slipstream SP2
Use integrator to add Latest Ryan pack 2.2.1
Use integrator to add this addon
If I stop there all is great - next step
Unpack Rollup2 and add all the hotfixes to SVCPACK and run them in the following order
KB895572.exe /quiet /norestart
KB891593.exe /quiet /norestart
KB895961.exe /quiet /norestart
KB899337.exe /quiet /norestart
KB899510.exe /quiet /norestart
KB888795.exe /quiet /norestart
KB902841.exe /quiet /norestart
KB900325.exe /quiet /norestart
wmfdist95.exe /Q:A /R:N /C:"wmsetsdk.exe /WMFDIST /Q /R:N /DisallowSystemRestore"
Everything seems to work - Add/remove shows everything, but when I run MCE I get an access voilation error. If I then RE-RUN KB900325 and reboot, everything works great.
So, has anyone gotten Rollup2 to install during the initial load of XP, before the first desktop?
UPDATE : If I move the Rollup files to a RunOnceEX type install, all works fine. Is that the only way?
Thanks
Bryan

Re: Rollup2
FYI, I believe nearly everything in Update Rollup 2 has been superceded by stuff in Ryan's pack, except for KB900325 itself, which is the true rollup. Everything else in the Update Rollup 2 package are prerequesites or at least recommended by Microsoft before the rollup is applied, but since they've been superceded, you just need KB900325.bryanh wrote:Unpack Rollup2 and add all the hotfixes to SVCPACK and run them in the following order
This may not have anything to do with your problem, but thought you should know.
Here, I dug up the details that I personally came up with back in April 2007:
WindowsXPMediaCenter2005-KB900325-usa - Update Rollup 2 for Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 (KB900325) .exe
KB888795 superseded by KB912024, included in RVM v2.1.4
KB891593 No longer included in RVM v2.x up to and including 2.1.4
KB895961 included in RVM v2.1.4
KB899337 superseded by KB915428, included in RVM v2.1.4
KB899510 superseded by KB911990, included in RVM v2.1.4
KB902841 superseded by KB911990, included in RVM v2.1.4
wmfdist95 superseded by WMP11
KB891593 was in Ryan's pack. It was added in v1.3.0, which was unreleased as detailed here http://www.ryanvm.net/msfn/changelog_archive.html.
Although KB891593 being superceded by what isn't in the changelog, I had asked about this way back when here http://www.ryanvm.net/forum/viewtopic.p ... 1593#51871, in which RyanVM replied
RyanVM wrote:FYI, KB891593 is long-superseded by the Update Pack (look at the file versions of qdvd.dll and quartz.dll)

BTW, everyone, here is the post in RyanVM's forum by DigeratiPrime on how to install MCE without .NET 1.0 http://www.ryanvm.net/forum/viewtopic.p ... done#50171.DigeratiPrime wrote:A long time ago I figured out a way to install MCE on XP Pro without .NET Framework 1.0 and without errors see here:
http://www.msfn.org/board/Windows-XP-20 ... ntry601236
The only thing I got stuck on was "integrating" the Update Rollup 2 package into the MEDIACTR.CAB to save time and space, I stopped pursuing it since the boxes I built for MCE purposes I "upgraded" to Vista with a few dual booting XP.
Also, I had boiled down his post to some instructions for myself, which are:
1a. nLite - Keep dbgeng.dll.
1b. nLite - Keep custsat.dll.
1c. nLite - Remove MCE component.
2. Extract NR1PFRE_EN - XP MCE 2005 original disc 2\CMPNENTS\MEDIACTR\I386\MEDIACTR.CAB to folder.
3. In command prompt, Expand.exe NR1PFRE_EN - XP MCE 2005 original\I386\MEDCTROC.IN_ to MEDIACTR\MEDCTROC.INF.
4a. Delete MEDIACTR\*.wmv.
4b. Edit MEDIACTR\MEDCTROC.INF and put ; in front of every line that ends in .wmv.
5. Install Windows XP.
6. "Installs RVM .NET1.1+SP1 (dotnet11sp1.exe), MCE WPA and MCE.cmd"
Contains
Code: Select all
REM .NET 1.1 + SP1 from RyanVM
dotnet11sp1.exe
REM WPA key (remove mce component with nlite)
REG ADD HKLM\SYSTEM\WPA\MediaCenter /v Installed /t REG_SZ /d 1 /f
REM MCE Setup.
rundll32.exe setupapi.dll,InstallHinfSection Freestyle 128 MEDIACTR\medctroc.inf
shutdown.exe -r -f -t 0 -c "Rebooting"
Contains
Code: Select all
REM Update Rollup 2 (extracted from WindowsXPMediaCenter2005-KB900325-usa.exe)
KB900325.exe /quiet /norestart
REM October 2006 Update Rollup
WindowsXPMediaCenter2005-KB925766-ENU.exe /quiet /norestart
shutdown.exe -r -f -t 0 -c "Rebooting"

Adding this filename to nLite's list of files to keep didn't help, but then I think I discovered why that didn't work. There is no icfgnt.dll file, there is a icfgnt5.dl_ source file. Nothing I tried ever solved the problem and I dropped trying this method for future MCE installs.
There's posts by other people about this "missing" file http://www.msfn.org/board/lofiversion/i ... 39510.html, and there's a post in there that actually refers back to here http://www.ryanvm.net/forum/viewtopic.p ... 15fba62d02.
The first thread includes a post that has a solution that worked for at least himself, but there were others who it definitely didn't work for.
Telenut said on Mar 12 2005, 05:00 AM:
I had the same problem after removing windows messenger, MSN browser, etc... with nLite.
Problem was solved by not removing them with nLite, but just don't install them by editing the winnt.sif
[Components]
msmsgs=off
msnexplr=off
media_clips=off
There's also at least one more post about this here http://www.ryanvm.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1653.

I got it to work....using searchengine original way of installing. Integrator 1 at a time for ryan update pack, this addon (minus the extra shortcut), the dotnet AIO, a self made addon pack following his order, wmp11 tweaked addon, then NRs internet Explorer 7 addon, then DX9 addon for integrator 1.51, all the rest of integrator addons that did not install anything to svcpack folder(except maybe .cat files) I install all of my other proggys and drivers through cmdlines.txt. I think I kept dbgeng.dll and custsat.dll not removing any components, added raid driver, made silent winnt.sif, and used the uxetheme etc tweaks with nlite. I think a correct install has something to do with the order of .cat files and addons in svcpack.inf. Gonna try to add some lines in the components section of winnt.sif to slim the install next.
